High School Freshman Guide

catherine byrd-5

Dear Freshmen,

Welcome to your next four years. They are what you make it. I’m not going to say that these next four years are going to be the best of your life, though, for some they will be. I like to believe that everyone has their ‘peak’ and this timeline is different for each person. High school may be the best years for one person while another experiences the same effect in college.

No matter when the golden years begin, you can still make high school worthwhile by remembering what’s important and striving to meet the goals you set in place for yourself. You need to set some goals for yourself regardless of whichever area you select. My goals were almost always academic, but pick the places in your life that matter to you most.

Enjoy my advice to you!

Everyone hates the freshmen

This isn’t true in every case, but be prepared to receive some heat from upperclassmen. Trust me, you’ll do the same once you’re in their shoes. It’s just your time to sit at the bottom of the totem pole, so don’t sweat it. It’s ok to take your time and adjust to your new environment; everyone ahead of you has been in your place and they know what it’s like.

Learn to take good notes now

If you don’t have a way of taking notes that works for you by senior year, then you will have a rough road ahead of you when you get to college. Notes are so important for succeeding in your classes, and you really need to try your hardest to get your best grades even in your first year. Look on Pinterest for ideas for note-taking or leave a comment if you want my advice in that area.

Push yourself

Colleges will look at all four years! Don’t look back and worry about classes you could have done better in (a few Cs versus a few Bs may decide which school you will attend in the future). I know I’ve looked back and been disappointed in myself for slacking off when I could have pushed myself further. Your GPA does matter for your college search in the future, but remember that it isn’t the only thing that defines who you are. Try taking one honors or AP class this year and evaluate how you handle the workload. See how much you can handle and give it your all. I slowly built up my honors classes from one in freshman year, three sophomore year, and then five junior and senior year. You don’t need to follow my timeline; decide which classes work best for you and experiment.

Don’t cheat

I don’t think everyone goes into school thinking that they can cheat their way out. Most people have the best intentions but get stuck in a difficult situation which leads to a far worse place than when they started. Getting caught cheating or plagiarizing can be very serious, even your permanent record serious. You would do better on an assignment by trying your best opposed to being caught cheating instead. Have faith in yourself and in your abilities, give it your best shot, and simply know that sometimes you won’t do well on an assignment, You can bring your grade back up so don’t worry because it isn’t the end of the world (my mentality at times).

Plan and Don’t Procrastinate

Procrastination is the student plague, and I’ve suffered from it too. I couldn’t list on two hands the numbers of things I’ve done to avoid doing my work from deep cleaning my closet to making a pretend Youtube video with movie star makeup. Be diligent and get your work done to avoid feeling stressed. Overall, getting your work done early gives you extra time to do things you love and that will make you happier altogether. Obviously, you might get a little behind and the best way to get yourself out of a last minute assignment is to stay calm and keep a level head to produce the best work you can.

Get to Know Your Teachers

They are there to help you. Ask them questions about homework you don’t understand and communicate with them about classes you might miss or times to meet with them about your questions from class. It is always better to talk with them earlier than later, especially if you have assignments you need an extended due date for. If you meet with your teachers before the due date (the sooner the better) and present them with a logical explanation as to why you can’t turn something in on that date, most would be willing to give you the extension. Show your teachers that you have a strong work ethic and are responsible, and they will be willing to help you succeed. They will also be important later on for teacher recommendations heading into college.

Try New Things

There is life outside of academics too! Branch out your freshman year and dabble in a few areas of your interests. Want to try soccer? Tryout for your school’s team or join an outside soccer club for the season. Like art? Check out the school’s art club or take a class in something that interests you. Join Student Government if it intrigues you. Volunteer at a local nonprofit or an animal shelter. My only advice for you is to find a few things that you love instead of trying to have the most extracurriculars. Focus on the quality of your experiences instead of the quantity. Once you find what you love to do, stick with it and see how much you can achieve in those areas. That is more fulfilling than trying to juggle ten different activities at once.

Be Comfortable With Change

This can be harder for some people, and I understand that. Change can be scary. Unfortunately, many of those Middle School friendships you made might break apart, and that’s okay. People change, and so will you. Your friend group might not have the same interests anymore and you may not all eat lunch together anymore or hang out on the weekends like you did before. There are still people in your high school that you can get to know who might be just like you. Everyone as a freshman is eager to make friends and they all feel the exact same way as you do. Look for people that make you happy and support you as loyal friends should do. Hold onto them, and don’t look back. Keep a few friends from middle school if they make you happy but don’t look to them as the end all, be all of your high school experience. I came in as a freshman with two friends, one of which went to another school and the other who has joined another circle. I found my own group of people and so will you.

Pass By Popularity

The whole invention of being popular and having status is the dumbest thing ever created. Popularity isn’t real, and though it can be exhilarating being caught up in the race, take a step back and realize that it doesn’t have any value. The popular kids won’t always be popular, and the false sense of status they feel won’t last forever. Read any posts online about popularity to see how being uncool is actually the coolest. This article about popularity is very interesting, explaining that sometimes the people with the highest status in high school struggle the most once they’re out in the real world while those who were considered “geeks” have a higher chance of becoming successful! If you’re popular, fantastic for you, but realize that it may not last as long as you might hope. Keep your good friends close.

Be Yourself

Don’t act cool for the upperclassmen because they’ll see right through you. Don’t act like an idiot to get attention because no one will respect you. Don’t fail classes because you think people will like you more. Don’t sign up for classes you hate because your friend or crush is in them. Don’t be afraid to ask questions because you’re afraid of looking stupid because someone else will always have the same question. Simply, don’t worry about what the people around you think, just worry about yourself and what makes you happy. Don’t fit in with the mold, because you’re better than that. You’re you, and you don’t need to explain yourself to anyone.

Avoid Drama

Don’t start it. Don’t spread it. Don’t listen to it. Rumors are what they are: rumors. Ignore the ones about yourself and be calm if they upset you. Address the bad gossip with the people you trust. While drama can be thrilling, it can hurt people just as easily. Think about if it would hurt you if the same rumor was being spread about you. The best advice I can give is to just worry about yourself and your life instead of trying to get the scoop on everyone else’s. None of it will matter when you reflect back on high school and some of this gossip can get you into trouble.

Don’t Judge

You don’t know the people around you, just like how many of them won’t know you either. Get to know people before you assume things about them. Everyone is different, and sometimes the people you think you’d like least (based on what you’ve heard about them) can become one of your best friends. I’ve had it happen before. While it’s easy to make assumptions, don’t believe them until you have evidence to sway your case in either direction. Judging others is a waste of your own time. Accept people for who they are just as you would hope someone would accept you.

Bullying Can Be Stopped

If someone is being bullied, be there for them and don’t be a bystander. Tell a teacher or a parent, and you can even do this anonymously if you want to avoid being a ‘snitch’. If you’re being bullied, tell an adult. Remain calm and act unbothered; the bullies only want to see your reaction and know they’ve hurt you. It’s ok to be hurt when you’re away from your bully because it is worse to ignore them and their cruel advances against you. Present to the bully with a face of indifference when you are around them, but keep talking to teachers or counselors behind closed doors and be real about their effect on you. It will get better, I promise. It will always get better.

Romance Isn’t Everything

If you meet someone and stay with them all four years, fantastic. If you like someone, tell them regardless of what might happen because you’ll regret it if you miss an opportunity to be with someone who might just be right for you or someone who has a lesson to teach you. Don’t change yourself to be with that guy or girl you like, and don’t pretend to like what they like to be cooler; they will find out. If you don’t like someone back, be nice to that person about their feelings because you’d want someone to do the same for you. If the person you like doesn’t like you back, you can be friends with them or take a few steps back for your own wellbeing. Keep yourself and schoolwork first over any guy/girl because they might not be permanent, and your goals and your future will be.

I hope you enjoyed this blog post! Write in the comments below the biggest thing you learned in high school for the freshmen!

Where to Travel this Year

catherine byrd-4

Morning Darlings!

I told my readers about how I knew traveling was my passion (link) and decided for my second post that I should include my travel bucket list!

I have so many places around the world that I want to explore, but I’ll start with my top 15 adventures and why I want to go see these places. I hope you’re inspired by my list and can add a few destinations to your list as well!

Screen Shot 2018-08-12 at 8.37.40 PM.png

Paris

France has been a dream for me from a young age, specifically because my horse’s name is Paris so it will always have a special place in my heart. I’ve been following Paris In Four Months religiously and the city looks picturesque like a dream! I’m dying to try a macaroon and see the Eiffel tower, Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre, and Notre Dame. Versailles is also high on my list of must-see destinations in the beautiful city along with the Luxembourg gardens. Beyond just Paris, I’ve heard that the France countryside is absolutely lovely and I desperately want to take a road trip too!

Screen Shot 2018-08-12 at 8.39.18 PM.png

London

Another big city just like Paris! I have sights like Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, and Buckingham Palace on my London list. I want to ride the Underground and visit the flower markets in the city. The food in London I’ve heard is fantastic having restaurants like Sketch, Duck & Waffle, Blixen, and the best street food. Churchill Arms is lovely and I want to get plenty of photographs!

Screen Shot 2018-08-12 at 8.41.40 PM

Iceland

This is a destination I never thought would be on my list, but after learning more about this magical place, I knew I had to go! Obviously, the Blue Lagoon is on my list and having a chance to see the Northern Lights is high on my bucket list! I’ve seen that you can stay in a bubble to see the lights, which sounds like the best adventure! After seeing so many images on Pinterest seeing the glacier caves, it’s a sight I must see. There are amazing waterfalls and lava falls with black sand beaches. There are lots of pictures of a natural bridge on the Anastarpi coastline that I must cross!

Screen Shot 2018-08-12 at 8.44.26 PM.png

Santorini

This island near Greece looks unreal! The white and blue speckled buildings on the rocks are dreamlike and I want to stay in a cave house with an infinity pool so badly. Oia looks like a beautiful city and it looks like an Insta-worthy trip.

Screen Shot 2018-08-12 at 8.46.14 PM.png

Bali

Bali is a new place on my list that I discovered recently after reading a blog post about a travel experience to this little piece of heaven in Indonesia. The swings you see just about the water are located in Bali and Heaven’s Gate is a perfect photography spot. The beaches and rice fields are magical and there are so many places to see from a monkey forest to dozens of amazing temples. The villas and airbnbs I’ve seen in Bali are so beautiful and inexpensive, and you can rent a little house in the trees for hardly any money at all. You can also have an elephant experience and be able to care or feed them at different centers

Screen Shot 2018-08-12 at 8.48.02 PM.png

Rome

I’ve been wanting to go to Rome for such a long time after listening to my Latin professor’s trips to the city over the years and after seeing all my friend’s photographs when she visited. With sights like St. Peter’s Basilica, Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, the Colosseum, and the Roman Forum, there is no lack of places to see. I want to visit Pompeii as well and see Vatican City while trying legendary pizza. I’ve heard that the catacombs are amazing and that Rome’s ice cream is delicious! The city is home to so much art, history, and culture that I just need to go see it all for myself.

Screen Shot 2018-08-12 at 8.49.26 PM.png

Amsterdam

Just watch The Fault in Our Stars to see why you must visit Amsterdam! The entire city is colorful and so lovely, the perfect place to bike wherever you go. From the canals to breathtaking street art, there is no lack of sights to see from the Anne Frank museum, the Van Gogh museum, a world-famous flower market, and Rembrandt’s house! This city is one of the most artistic in the world with excellent food and unique places to stop like the iamsterdam sign to the colorful homes lining the streets.

Screen Shot 2018-08-12 at 8.51.23 PM.png

Venice

The canals of Venice are famous for their beauty and this city is a must-see for me. You can ride in a gondola and stay right by the water. This place looks like the perfect city to get lost in, and there are so many sights like St. Mark’s Square, Campanile di San Marco, Saint Mark’s Basilica, Santa Maria Della Salute, Rialto Bridge, Doges’ Palace, and Bridge of Sighs! With lots of great food and photo-worthy streets, Venice has a spot on my travel bucket list.

Screen Shot 2018-08-12 at 8.53.02 PM.png

Dublin

Ireland is so beautiful! The Cliffs of Moher are famous just are all the castles that dot the Irish countryside. The Dark Hedges look straight out of a fairytale as does the Giant’s Causeway. Dublin has so much to see including Dublin Castle, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and Trinity College. The Long Room at Trinity College is amazing and houses some very old books like the Book of Kells. A book lover’s dream! You can also visit the legendary red Temple Bar along with a large number of other fantastic pubs. Visit the Guinness Factory while you’re at it!

Screen Shot 2018-08-12 at 8.54.20 PM.png

Prague

My art teacher went to Prague and raved about his trip. He’s an excellent photographer and the city immediately was added to my bucket list. The city is known for its beautiful architecture and museums, and there are so many places to go like Charles Bridge, the Prague Astronomical Clock, the Museum of Communism, Prague Castle, Mala Strana, Old Town Square, and Wallenstein Garden where you can see white peacocks! The Dancing Buildings are legendary and you can visit the Kafka museum or the John Lennon wall. The city is so colorful and full of personality that it is a must visit. Take your camera and go for a long walk.

Screen Shot 2018-08-12 at 8.56.03 PM.png

Berlin

I confess, one of the main reasons I wanted to go to Germany was to see the beautiful Neuschwanstein Castle that inspired the castle in Beauty and The Beast; I always liked Disney. In Berlin, there are so many things to see like the Brandenburg Gate, The Reichstag, Berlin Cathedral, East Side Gallery, Museum Island, Holocaust Memorial, Bellevue Palace, French Cathedral, and Victory Column to name a few! The city has fantastic food and colorful murals and this only one city in Germany! There are so many other breathtaking places to visit outside of Berlin as well!

Screen Shot 2018-08-12 at 8.57.21 PM.png

Hawaii

I’m going to Hawaii soon and I am so excited! The islands are a dream destination for any traveler or vacation-goer for so many reasons. The beaches are beautiful and attract surfers from all over the world. You can swim with sea turtles or dolphins and scuba dive in some of the best areas in the world. The Staircase to Heaven is a must-see (and illegal but for the adventure, am I right?) and there are so many fantastic hikes to take to amazing waterfalls, the Pillbox, Crouching Lion and Dead Man’s Catwalk. I want to skydive here and take a helicopter ride so badly!

Screen Shot 2018-08-12 at 8.58.27 PM.png

Bora Bora

Helen Owen inspired me to travel here from her beautiful Instagram feed and the picturesque little bungalow she stayed in over the water. You can take a lagoon tour, visit a Motu, snorkel in the Coral Gardens, see lots of sharks, rent a jet ski, and visit the spa to treat yourself! This is a vacation spot I want to visit, especially since you can swim with turtles in their sanctuary.

Screen Shot 2018-08-12 at 8.59.58 PM.png

Thailand

Thailand landed on my list because of the Elephant Sanctuaries and the amazing experiences you can have with the animals (while not riding them). Also, of course, because of the floating lantern festival that looks straight out of Tangled! Thailand has a variety of beautiful temples like the White Temple or Marble Temple, and you can visit a monkey beach! You can island hop to see all the sights like the Grand Palace and Emaciated Buddha.

Screen Shot 2018-08-12 at 9.01.18 PM.png

Cape Town

I visited Cape Town in the January of 2017 and I absolutely loved it! The city is beautiful with Table Mountain on one side and the beach on the other. The food is delicious and we stayed in Camps Bay, a charming and more touristy area that was in a perfect location. Ride a cable car up the mountain or drive to Cape Point to see the tip of Africa. Head to Boulder Beach to see penguins! Hike Lion’s head and go see the breathtaking botanical garden. You can shark cave dive or take a drive to bungee jump off the highest bridge jump in the world! Walk on the Boomslang aerial walkway to see above the trees. Cape Town is a colorful and magical city in Africa with lots of safari options and I highly recommend it. I’m so ready to return!

Thank you for reading my little bucket list! Comment below some places that are on your list too!

Review of La Mer’s Creme de la Mer

catherine byrd-3

Hello Loves!

Skincare has recently become a love of mine as I’ve been trying to up my beauty routine to the next level. After seeing this product listed as a favorite by other bloggers, I wanted to give it a try as well.

Behold Creme de la Mer, the moisturizing cream!

I got the smaller size around a week ago and have really enjoyed using it. The texture is creamy and you don’t have to use a lot to make your skin soft! That’s probably my favorite thing about this moisturizer because it will last longer.

My old moisturizer by Bobbi Brown (loved it!) was super refreshing but I always felt the need to put more on my face than I needed. It was a lighter formula so you could just scoop out a large dollop of it for your face, more than you actually needed.

La Mer’s moisturizer is thicker and I hardly overuse it which makes me happier since it was an investment! It really does make my skin look healthier with a nice glow that my old moisturizer lacked.

I recommend Creme de la Mer even if it is a little pricey. The way your skin looks and feels after use is worth it! You can purchase La Mer on their website where you can get free samples, at Nordstrom, or at Sephora (get them points, girl!)

7 Things You Don’t Know About Me

catherine byrd

Hello, my lovely readers!

Byrd of Passage is my new blog for 2018 that will focus on my own personal wanderings involving fashion and travel in my everyday life. This creative outlet will showcase my style and allow me to express myself through photography and writing.

To begin, I wanted to share with you all a few facts about me as the connoisseur of this blog so that you could know about me.

First, I am a teen blogger.

I am 18 years old and headed off to college this fall. I’m very excited to bring my own perspective into blogging from a young age and hopefully turn this hobby into something more after gaining experience and knowledge.

I’m a country girl.

I live on a little farm in North Carolina with my family and we own four horses: Paris, Romeo, Ozzie, and Opie (who I can feature in a post if you wish! Comment below). We have 10 acres and I’ve loved having plenty of animals in my life as we also have three dogs and three cats. It gets a little wild around here. Living in the country has been wonderful, though I’m ready to branch out and explore new places. I have a dream of living in a city or even abroad one day, and we’ll see if I make it there!

I’m an introvert and a bookworm.

I used to hate being an introvert because no one seemed to understand my appreciation of alone time and my quiet nature. As I’ve grown to understand myself, I know it is who I am and I’m proud of being an introvert because of the strengths I’ve discovered that doesn’t revolve around being the life of the party. Everyone is different, and I’m a girl who loves to read. It’s who I am, and I hope to broadcast my personality through this blog. Maybe I’ll help a few introverts on the way too.

Photography is my biggest hobby.

I learned that I loved photography while showing my horses. After I was finished riding for the day, I’d sit in the stands and take photographs of my friends when they showed with my mom’s camera. I knew it was something I wanted to keep after realizing I loved taking photographs of my friends riding more than I actually liked to ride my own horses. I’ve kept up photography since I was around 12 and hope I can grow in the skill to take pictures of my travels and experiences.

I didn’t want to travel until a year ago.

While I did appreciate the travel Instagram accounts I followed, I didn’t really think traveling would be right for me. I discovered that I loved traveling after taking a risk and heading to South Africa for a two-week mission trip to run a camp for AIDS orphans at a local school. I loved it so much that when I came home I knew it was all I wanted to do! I wanted to explore new places and have adventures like I had in Africa. It was life-changing and wanderlust has become a real feeling for me. I’m hoping for more international trips in the future that I can share on my blog. If you want to hear more about my Africa trip, comment below!

I love makeup!

Some of my favorite brands are Urban Decay, Fenty Beauty, Kat Von D, Tarte, Dior, Chanel, and Too Faced. I have plenty of their products, and currently eyeshadow is my obsession. I love buying new palettes to do my eye makeup. I’ll share some of my essentials and favorites on this blog as well! I am also expanding into skincare as well.

My dream is being able to be a travel photographer.

I’d say this is my more distant dream as my blog is just starting and I don’t know where it will take me yet. I’d love to be able to go around the world and take photographs as two of my passions would become my job, and I’d be able to write all I wanted! My other dream involves graduating college, pursuing a masters degree, and if I stick with the major I think I want now, then I’d become a CMO at a company with a corner office. Girl Boss!

These are the top seven things you should know about me heading into my blog! Thank you for reading and comment below if you want to hear any more about these seven!

What Staples to Buy for Your Fall Wardrobe

catherine byrd-11.jpg

Hello and good afternoon!

I went on a shopping spree and have so many new fall essentials that you definitely need in your closet. With the transition from warm weather to cold approaching, now is the best time to start adding in some new staple winter pieces gradually into your wardrobe to be prepared. You’ll thank yourself later when you aren’t scrambling to pick up sweaters and coats to keep yourself warm every day.

Check out my Youtube video featuring my Fall Staples Haul if you’d prefer to watch instead of read.

Jackets & Blazers

Plaid Midi Coat

I purchased one by Mural off Nordstrom and am so in love! It is the cutest coat and so perfect for fall into winter. I stalked it for an XS for three whole days before it came back into stock but it was so worth it.

White Blazer

This is a trend that I’ve been seeing recently and absolutely adore! It pairs so well with a white cami (like this one) and is so chic. Perfect fall fashion trend.

Pink Striped Blazer

Blazers are essential for fall and winter, and I was lucky enough to pick up a pink one on sale from Free People. It’s so chic, feminine, and fun!

Leather Jacket

If you don’t own a leather jacket, you are missing out! Pick up a faux or real leather jacket and you will have so many outfit options. I love my pink leather jacket by Hinge because it is so chic.

Green Utility Jacket

My utility jacket from Hinge is to die for! It is casual and super cute! You have so many different outfit options with it as it is so versatile. I really recommend adding one to your wardrobe for the fall.

Sweaters & Cardigans

Grey Turtleneck

This oversized grey turtleneck by Free People is so soft and warm! I was nearly sweating in the dressing room so it does its job well. Pair it with a cute pair of jeans and boots for the perfect cold-weather look.

Plunge Sweater

I got this sweater from ASTR via Revolve to go with my Free People bralettes and what a match! The sweater is comfy and so adorable! It is the perfect, textured sweater for fall.

Black Cardigan

This long duster cardigan from The Limited is on sale and so chic! I paired it with a black bodysuit and a green skirt for a casual look. Cardigans are a fall essential and this one is just perfect.

Tops & Bralettes

Camo Top (similar)

My dark camo top from Free People is to die for! It is so soft and really cute, perfect to pair with jeans or a skirt to dress it up. It’s the perfect casual top to wear and very stylish.

Lace Cami

I own this in white and black from Zara, and for under $40, it looks like it cost me so much more! It’s very simple and so chic. I either wear it on its own or put it under a cardigan or a blazer for a polished look.

Bralette

This Free People bralette is crazy popular right now and for good reason. It is lacey and adorable! I love wearing low cut shirts that show off the edges of the lace paired with a longer necklace. I own this bralette in black, grey, and white!

Black Bodysuit

Bodysuits are a staple in anyone’s wardrobe, and they are essential for fall! You can easily dress up this Topshop bodysuit under a blazer or a jacket for the cold weather for a simple, refined look that I love. Also, check out these Topshop tank tops that are only $10!!!

Striped Romper

I was wearing this romper in my clothing haul youtube video and I really love it! It’s chic, simple, and adorable. It pairs well with the black cardigan that I linked above.

Bottoms

Green Mini Skirt

This skirt by Free People is on sale at Belk’s! It is so cute, and I wore it with the black bodysuit and cardigan that are linked above. It’s the perfect fall mini skirt!

Black Jeans

Jeans are a must-have for fall, especially in black! I buy Articles of Society jeans because of how soft they are and their fit. I’m taller than most women at 5’9″ and these jeans work great for me.

Shoes

Ugg Slippers

I got slippers for college (I’m leaving in less than a week! Crazy!) so I invested in a pair by Ugg. They are soft and easy to slide on so I really do love these!

Black Sock Boots (similar)

I got a pair of black sock boots, and honestly, I’m obsessed! They are so stylish and fantastic for fall. You can just slip them on with practically any outfit and walk out the door, which is so nice.

White Sneakers

I’ve been in the market for another pair of Adidas white sneakers because sadly our puppy used mine for a chew toy! Adidas has always had my favorite sneakers because of how comfortable they are and how cute!

Thank you so much for reading! Happy Sunday!

Wardrobe Organization

The question is simply: how can I organize my closet in a way that showcases my clothes while still being functional?

In this blog post, I’ll share my tips and tricks for keeping your closet clean and tidy. I completely reorganized my closet recently and I’ve been liking my new system much better than the old way I “organized” my clothes.

Using my old method, I just threw in my clothes in a very free-form structure with jeans and longer shirts or dresses hanging on a top rack and other shirts and shorts on the bottom rack.

Everything was just in my closet in some shape or form, making it more difficult to pick out outfits as I didn’t really have any organization to anything. It made choosing anything a much longer process than it needed to be, resulting with me standing aimlessly in my closet.

I won’t say this doesn’t happen now from time to time but this system has helped me pair my outfits much easier than before. Now I can get into the steps of how I organized my closet from top to bottom! Enjoy!

One Word: Color

I organized my clothes by color, starting with black and working my way down all the way to pinks and reds. This really helped me be able to group all my shirts into these categories and organize them back into my closet to create a rainbow effect, which made me very happy to have everything match!

I put my skirts on the bottom rack into this color scheme as well, separated from my shirts.

Type Of Clothing

In the groups of colors, I put my heavier items like coats and jackets at the front of each color and worked down from there. This way you would start with say a black coat and end at a black tank top before merging over into a grey sweater. I thought this grouped everything very well and kept the articles of clothing in places where I knew I would be able to locate them quickly.

When I wanted my green Barbour coat, all I had to do was look in my green selection of clothing towards the beginning of that color, and there was my coat! Easy!

To Hang or Not To Hang?

I either hang my clothes or I fold and stack on shelves or in the drawers of my dresser. The rule of thumb I follow for whether or not to hang up an item or to fold it would be how nice of quality is it, does it wrinkle easily, and is more of a comfort clothes item or not.

My t-shirts, long sleeves shirts, sweatpants, athletic shorts, and sweatshirts usually get folded and put away in a drawer while my nicer items like a blouse, trench coat, or anything else a little fancier are hung up in their color section.

I’d recommend stacking and folding items you don’t wear as often to save room for other articles of clothing you want to hang in your closet.

Drawer Dividers

I love using drawer dividers to organize everything! You can get cheap little baskets that fit in your drawers to store anything you want from your socks to your bras. I find these to work well to get the most out of your space and keep everything from turning into a cluttered pile of miscellaneous pieces. Make sure you roll your clothes as well if you want to avoid wrinkles!

Wall of Shoes

From my image, you see that I have a very handy set of shelves to organize some of my clothing and especially all my shoes. If you have the spade, definitely take advantage of your shelves to display your shoes! It is one of the most satisfying experiences to just take in all your shoes on the wall.

I’d recommend investing in some type of shelving for your shoes or setting up a few racks in order to keep them off the floor or piled in a corner because I used to sadly do that all the time.

That is all my closet organization tips for today! Happy Monday!

Bobbi Brown Appreciation

Good morning!

This post today is going to be about one of my favorite make-up brands: Bobbi Brown. Her make-up is always high-quality and never fails me whenever I need pigmented eyeshadow or eyelash-pumping mascara. I use a shade of her eyeshadow for my eyebrows religiously just as the Eye Opening mascara daily.

The Bobbi Brown lipsticks are always my go-to as they stay on all day and all night long! I have a few deep shades of red that are perfect for any classic look. Let me also add that the highlighter and blush from Bobbi Brown is fantastic! My cheeks practically glow whenever I use the two combined with a soft contour from my Fenty stick. I used both for my formal and got so many compliments!

I recommend Bobbi Brown completely! Try out some of her mascara or a lipstick color and you will be in love just like I was from day one!

Sunset Photography

I took some very cool photographs with golden hour lighting that I wanted to share because I accomplished this in a messy dining room! Holding on tightly to my Canon Rebel X, I managed to take these on my own by just holding the camera, no tripod needed with only a sliver of sun peeking through the window right at sunset.

Photography is one of my favorite forms of media and I love taking pictures especially fashion, travel, portraits, and animals. It’s a skill that I recently took to the next level by conquering manual and I’ve been loving the new power of design I’ve had after learning my ISO from my Aperture!

The biggest tip for those wishing to better their photography skills on a DSLR is to learn manual settings. Comment if you want me to write a post about it! In the meantime, enjoy my photographs!
